This week in Kindergarten...

  • In Reading we took home our very first High Frequency Reader titled, School.  Hopefully you and your child had a chance to practice this at home.  Please save these great books in a container by your childs’ bed and practice them often as a bed time routine.  You read to them and…how exciting, they are ready to read to you!!!
  • The words we are working on reading are; I, A, See and Am.
  • In Math we continued to have such a wonderful time graphing.  We also started making magnificent patterns with our bodies (clap, snap, clap, snap) as well as with blocks (red, blue, red, blue).
  • We started taking standardized tests on the computer this week, we will finish next Wednesday.  The name of the exam is a MAP test by NWEA, and your child will take this same test throughout his/her Elementary School career.  The results of these tests are used by teachers to see where your child is at with Reading and Math skills.  We will be taking these tests again in the winter and spring to monitor progress and look for ways to enhance learning.
  • Our Nursery Rhymes this week were;
    • Hickory Dickory Dock
    • Little Miss Muffet

We celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s Birthday on Monday.  The K Friends wanted me to share with you our applesauce recipe.

Peel and slice apples and place them into a crockpot.

Let them cook on High for 4-5 hours.

Add cinnamon and sugar to taste.

(You can place apples in without peeling, as most of the nutrients come from the skin.  Strain after cooking to remove left over or unwanted peelings).

The Kindergarten Friends also asked me to relay our play-dough recipe from last week.

1 cup flour

1/2 cup salt

2 teaspoons Cream of Tartar

1 cup water
1 teaspoon cooking oil
7-8 drops of food coloring

Mix the flour and salt.  Add the cream of tartar, water, and oil, Mix well. Cook over medium heat until ingredients form a ball. This process almost automatically forms a ball of the dough on the stove and its not to hot to touch. Turn out and knead until smooth, about 1 minute, and let it cool. Add desired food coloring. This play-dough recipe will make play-dough that will keep for at least two months if kept in a sealed plastic bag or container and longer if you store it in the refrigerator.

Lunch Numbers- Please, please practice these at home.

Book It-  Each month I will be sending home a paper pizza for you to fill in with the titles of books that you have read at home.  Please send these back to school sometime in the month of October.  At the end of the month I will send home your free Pizza certificate from Pizza Hut.

Important Upcoming Events...

  • Fire Station- We will be taking our first Field Trip to the Fire Station this Wednesday October 5th. If you signed up to be a helper, please meet us at the fire station around 9:00am.  Thanks!

  • Picture Day is Monday October 10th.  Bring your best smile to school with you!  The picture order form is attached.

October Treat and Mystery Bag calendars are attached.

Have a wonderful weekend K Families!!!

What a great first week of Kindergarten.  It has been so much fun getting to know all of my new friends!

Here are a few of the fun things we did today…
  • We had an assembly in the gym with all of the Kindergarten classes, we read a book with Mr. Colbeck about new school shoes, and sang funny songs.
  • We had our first music class with Miss Lyseng.
  • We played math games
  • We learned all about our classroom stoplight. (Everyone has a clothespin with their name on it.  If you are a good listener it stays on green, if you make a bad choice you move to yellow which means uh-oh slow down, if you make more bad choices your clothespin moves to red and you take a time-out) Looking forward to many green light days of fun with these great listening friends!
  • We had a super center time and did fun art projects and played with new toys.
  • What a busy and fun 2 days of school!

Looking ahead to next week…
Color Days and Rhymes
Next week we will begin learning about Nursery Rhymes.  Each day we will explore a new rhyme. Here is our schedule for the week.
  • Monday- Wear Red to school.  We will learn Humpty Dumpty.
  • Wednesday- Wear Blue to school.  We will learn Little Boy Blue.
  • Friday- Wear Yellow to school.  We will learn Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

More Kindergarten News…

Otter Pride Night

Tonight is Otter Pride Night at the Kennedy Secondary School.  Games and fun from 5-7 in the gold gym.  Don’t forget to wear maroon and gold.  Head to the football game afterwards and cheer on our mighty Otter football team.

Lunch Money

If you are sending lunch money or milk money for cold lunches, please place the check or cash in a sealed envelope with your childs’ name and lunch number on the outside.  Paper-clipping these to our parent teacher journals will assure that I get them to our lunchroom.  Thanks!

Shoes

Mrs. Rogness our Gym teacher has asked that all K friends come to gym class in tennis shoes.  Although sandals and dress shoes are so cute, it is hard to run and play games.  On that note, if your child is able to tie their own shoes, shoes with laces are wonderful.  However if your child does not know how to tie their own shoes velcro may be a better option.  If there are 22 kids in the class and everyone needs Mrs. J to tie their shoes that would be 44 shoes to tie several times during our day J  This pregnant teacher has a hard time bending over to help J Thanks!

Ice Cream
A big thank you to Pat Connelly at Dairyland for delivering icecream to all of our Kindergarten Friends on their first day of school.  It was such a treat!

Email

I did send out a Kindergarten Parent email to all of you.  If you did not receive one it must mean that I did not get your address entered into my computer correctly.  Please email me at ejyrkas@FergusOtters.org to add your email address to our list.  Thanks for all of the great replies so far.

Thanks for a great first week, we are off to a wonderful start!

Kindergarten Hugs,

Mrs. J

I will be sending home a packet of work for you to use on rainy days this summer. To prepare for a very successful first grade year please do not forget to practice K skills.  Use the K report card as a guide to help you create little review times for your child.  It’s easiest to maintain those skills by setting aside one or two set days and times a week to quick review site words, numbers and letter sounds.  Three months can be a long time to remember something when you are 6!  And of course don’t forget to read, read, read every day to your child.  Just reading each day can Greatly affect your child’s academic success for years to come.

Have a wonderful summer, best wishes to you as you continue your learning adventure.  I will always consider it an honor to have worked with you and your kiddo!  Don’t forget to stop by and visit!

Reminders

Before the school year ends please pay all lunch account balances, and return all library books J

Have a great long weekend!  We will celebrate with our last day on Wednesday June 1st.

Love, Mrs J
